The Island of Ioannina, as it is known, is formed in the center of the lake Pamvotida, the second most ancient European lake, that hosts rare species of flora and fauna. It is one of the few lake islands in the word, which is inhabited and the only one that does not have a name. The arrival in the Island gives the impression that time on this place has stopped. The settlement of the Island has been described as traditional because of the scenic houses, with their small yards full of flowers, and the little souvenir shops selling folk art objects. Nowadays, the Island is the third most important monastic center in Greece, after the monastic community of Mount Athos and Meteora, due to its seven remarkable Monasteries. The history of the Island is connected to the infamous Ottoman Albanian ruler Ali Pasha, also
known as the Lion of Epirus. Ali Pasha had a tragic end, as he was assassinated by Soultan’s troops, in the cells of the Monastery of St. Panteleimonas, in the Island.
